VOLUME TWO: IT'S EASY WHEN YOU KNOW WHAT!
|
| |
The Rhythm Knowledge philosophy is primarily based on two fundamentals of management and of human behavior; direction and discipline. All else being equal, whoever has the most direction and discipline has the best chance of fulfilling any dream.
The exercises in Volume Two are, in effect, step-by-step directions toward success, and the results will provide more than enough motivation to instill a strong sense of discipline.

Everyone needs direction. If you're going to a town you've never visited before, you look for someone who's been there often enough to have found the shortcuts. Mike has spent the last thirty years trying to figure out which practice-methods produce the best results. He's gone through many that simply waste time, but, along the way, he's put together quite a collection of methods which yield impressive results, and fast. You can do the same, if you've got thirty years to spare. Or, you can save yourself a LOT of trial and error by using the Rhythm Knowledge methods.
Discipline is something we can all use some help with. Discipline is best maintained through motivation, and motivation is best fueled by results. You need to see results as you go - it's not enough to have some lofty goal that you MIGHT achieve after years of hard work. If you've ever looked out the window of a plane, over the ocean or above the clouds, you probably felt like you were traveling at 5 mph, although you were actually traveling at more than 500 mph. If your flight was more than a couple of hours long, it probably felt like days. The thing is, you didn't pass any "milestones" along the way, so you never really knew how far along you were. Rhythm Knowledge sets up some milestones, and shows you how to make your own, so you know when you've made some progress. You can set your sights as far ahead as you like, as long as you can check at regular intervals and see that you've made progress.
On the subject of goals, Rhythm Knowledge (in particular, Volume Two) focuses a lot of attention on technique. Don't be fooled into thinking that technique is a goal. It's a means to an end, nothing more. Your goal should be to play whatever comes from your heart. This is true whether your happiest moments are spent jamming in the garage with your friends, or whether you won't be satisfied by anything less than Madison Square Garden. You need technique, so that you won't settle for four eighth-notes on the snare, when what you really felt was an eleven-note roll across three toms. The real goal is to master any given technique to such an extent that you simply don't think about it anymore ... you just play.
